The Gallagher Bros: Time Off Interview

Though brothers Rob and Harry Gallagher grew up attached to their guitars, it was only after each playing in other bands for years that they finally decided to join forces in 2003.

Now, the Brisbane-based duo are gaining a strong reputation for their singer/songwriter style and their incredible talent for vocal harmonies.

"We liked each other's material and then combining [our songs] came pretty easily after that," Harry says of working together. "Being brothers, we could find a common wavelength without too much trouble. We're not afraid to tell each other what we think."

"Our voices are so similar that it's so easy to get super tight harmonies," Rob adds. "We have our own individual voices as well as this third vocal instrument: the harmony."

Launching their debut self-titled EP at The Troubadour this Friday Jul 29, the brothers recruited a few respected musician friends to fill out their sound both on record and on stage.

"The songs that made it onto the EP were songs from our catalogue that the band felt most comfortable with taking to the studio," Rob explains. "Songs like 'Ordinary Girl' and 'The Only Thing' are older songs that have stood the test of time. They are in there for a bit of quality assurance."

While Rob and Harry shared the writing responsibilities of the older songs, they've recently started writing together.

"When you write music alone you only have yourself to feed back on it," Harry says of collaborating. "Together it makes it a whole lot more fun. When one brings a chord progression or part of a melody to the other and you see them light up, that's a good feeling. When they then add a new change in a place you were stuck then that's even better."
